Southern Netherlands
The Southern Netherlands (also known as the Catholic Netherlands) is the historical name for the part of the Low Countries that remained under Habsburg rule after the Revolt in 1581. The area roughly encompasses present-day Belgium and Luxembourg. The history of this region is characterized by the following crucial periods:
- Spanish Rule (1556-1714)
- Austrian Rule (1714-1794)
- French Period (1794-1815)
- United Kingdom of the Netherlands (1815-1830)
- Creation of Belgium (1830)
