Batavian Republic (1795-1806)

The Batavian Republic encompassed a large part of present-day Netherlands. The period was named after the Batavians, a Germanic tribe seen as the precursor to the Dutch people. The French Revolution led to the establishment of the Batavian Republic. Terms such as liberty (liberté), equality (égalité), and fairness (fraternité) were central. To this day, these words appear on French coins; first the franc and later the euro.

Coinage was based on the system of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. Denominations range from duit to double gold ducat.
